Five Goals for a Fairtrade Town

Five Goals for a Fairtrade Town
The purpose of a Fairtrade Town is to contribute to the Fairtrade Foundation's aim of tackling poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal, through encouraging support for the FAIRTRADE Mark.

In order to fulfil this aim by becoming a Fairtrade Town, the above five goals must be realised.
Our Group has now achieved all these goals and we have receivd a signed and dated certificate from the Fairtrade Foundation. A celebratory Fairtrade Breakfast was held at Taylor's Restaurant on 22nd July 2006 where Rose presented the
certificate to Alan Ranger, Vice-Chair of the Town Council. For more details, see in 'Campaign Events.'
Our main aim now is to maintain this status and submit successful renewals to the Fairtrade Foundation. On 2nd October 2007, we heard the welcome news that our application for renewal had been successful - in fact we have passed 'with flying colours.' Our next renewal is due in July 2009.
Please see below the comments from the Fairtrade Foundation on each of the goals when we applied for status for the first time. Back to top
Goal One - Local Council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade
Our local Town Council passed the resolution in December 2004. The Council use Fairtrade tea, coffee and bananas and are in discussion about widening this to include other Fairtrade products such as Fairbreak bars.

The Fairtrade Foundation says:
"Congratulations, this goal is met. The Council should now take steps to raise awareness of the full range of Fairtrade products including tea, coffee, chocolate, juices, fresh and dried fruits, wines, honey, cakes, snacks, cereal bars, sauces, spreads and roses and offer them to staff in the Council buildings. For an up-to date list see our website at www.fairtrade.org.uk" Back to top
Goal Two - A range of (at least two)Fairtrade products is readily available in the area's shops and local cafes/catering establishments
For a town the size of Burgess Hill, it is recommended that at least 6 shops and 3 cafes supply at least two Fairtrade products.

We now have various shops selling at least two Fairtrade food products; these include  Waitrose, Lidl, Tesco, Co-op, Holland & Barrett, Threshers, Wine Rack and La Cantina Deli.
Fairtrade bananas are now available most Saturdays in the open air Market, situated just outside the library.

'Go Gourmet' and 'Present Company' also sells Maya Gold Fairtrade chocolate as well as other products.

There are many cafes/restaurants serving Fairtrade refreshments, eg, Barcena, Hins Chinese Restaurant, St. John's Cafe, Sennit, Mooch@76, Costa Coffee, St. Andrew's Cafe, La Cantina Deli and Go Gourmet. There are several other cafes/bars looking into the possibility of providing a Fairtrade alternative for their customers.

Although not carrying the Fairtrade logo, 'Present Company' owned by husband and wife team, Brian and Louise Wiseman, have a huge variety of fairly traded gifts from countries such as India, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia. They work closely with a number of suppliers who are members of BAFTS (British Association of Fairtrade Shops). Please see link below for more information.

A Directory of all Fairtrade goods available in Burgess Hill has now been published, and is available from the Help Point. This is updated regularly.

Goal Three - Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places
There are quite a few companies and organisations offering Fairtrade to their staff, for example YMCA, Schering, Modular Cabling Systems, Stoners Jewellers, NCH Charity Shop, The Whole Business, Radmall's Funeral Director's, St. Wilfrid's School, Sheddingdean School, Manor Field School, Newick House School, St. Paul's Catholic College, Home Start-Mid-Sussex, The Music Bus, St. Andrew's Church, St. John's Church, St. Wilfrid's Church, the United Reformed Church, St. Edward's and the Methodist Church, Gateway Baptist Church and Sheddingdean Baptist Church.

The Fairtrade Foundation says:
"Congratulations for encouraging more businesses, churches, schools and organisations to use Fairtrade products over the past year. We hope that this will continue. Perhaps places already supporting Fairtrade could demonstrate it with a window sticker. Is there a flagship employer already supporting Fairtrade? If not, maybe this could be made a priority in the next year. " Back to top
Goal Four - Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
The local press is very supportive of our campaign and we have had several features in the local papers; see the 'Press Items' button for more information.

In addition to the local papers we have managed to get coverage of our activities on the local radio. We regularly use BrightFM's 'Live Guide' service to announce our events a day or so before they happen.

The Fairtrade Foundation says:
"Thank you for sending in the press cuttings. Congratulations for organising such a varied amount of well-supported events, and succeeding in gaining media coverage. This will significantly contribute to a greater awareness of the FAIRTRADE mark in and around Burgess Hill, and support for the Fairtrade cause." Back to top
Goal Five - A local Fairtrade steering group is convened
This was set up in March 2005 and meets monthly to organise campaign strategies.
Among the events organised are a 'Live 4 Fairtrade' concert in the local shopping centre and a competition for local children to design a poster advertising Fairtrade products.
The group is a wide cross section of our community.

The Fairtrade Foundation says:
"Well done, for forming a diverse steering group that represents the various organisations, faith groups and businesses in Burgess Hill. This will significantly help the success of future campaigns." Back to top
